Digitising cardiology workflows
It is not unusual in the NHS to still rely on outdated systems that use manual processes and Excel spreadsheets to run departments and manage patient data. This creates an increased risk of human error, inefficient use of staff time and often an Information Governance (IG) risk with the potential for data to be lost. Fragmented patient records result in delays in clinical decision making and treatment, and affects patient’s lives. The SWFT Cardiac Investigation Unit (CIU) is battling with similar challenges.
The opportunity
The SWFT CIU approached the Digital Hub to help find a solution that will digitise and automate their processes. The aim was to save staff time, minimise the chance human error, transfer and keep data safely whilst getting information to patients as soon it became available. Consolidating updates to patient records to ensure timely decision making and treatment was also essential.
What we are doing
Keeping the outcomes that the CIU wanted in mind, the Digital Hub team explored the market for different solutions. We set up an event to showcase the four best suppliers we found. Assessing each option based on set criteria, the SWFT CIU made a decision on who they wanted to go with. As their choice was an already established off-the-shelf solution, it did not require for us to run a proof of concept. However, we did support the project by applying for funding with NHSX for it’s implementation. The project received £407,000.
As the solution is being implemented, the Digital Hub team are supporting the project by monitoring it’s benefits. The solution will automate a lot of the Unit’s manual processes by digitising workflows and the transfer of data, giving clinical staff more time with patients. This will improve the quality of patient data and compliance with national reporting requirements. It will also help the Cardiac Investigation Unit manage the growing burden of remote follow-up and reduce the time needed in face-to-face clinical settings whilst aid in admission avoidance. Once the solution has been fully implemented, we will prepare an evaluation report on what efficiencies the new system has created and how the Unit has benefited overall.
